Palatable local knowledge for the North Carolina diver

Clawson’s

There’s not much to dislike about Clawson’s. They have been a fixture on the Beaufort waterfront forever, have a fantastic historic décor, and are staunchly dependable.

They’ve got great burgers and a crab dip to kill for. There’s typically a grilled fish special, steamed shrimp, and excellent chicken wings, so even the most persnickety palate is likely to come away happy. (I happen to really like their Shrimp and Grits even though it’s more of a South Carolina thing, but if you find this seemingly odd combination attractive, Clawson’s does it well.)

This is one of the better places for groups…and flip flops and shorts are entirely acceptable. You might want to make reservations if you have a bunch of people, otherwise there’s a nice bar to hang out in while you’re waiting.
